The presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has expressed sympathy over the earthquake in Turkey.

In the early hours of Monday, February 6, a terrible earthquake struck numerous towns in Turkey and Syria.

More than 2,000 people have been confirmed dead.

Following the collapse of around 6,217 buildings in 10 provinces in Turkey, many more people are reportedly trapped beneath the rubble.

The PDP presidential candidate, took to his verified Twitter page to sympathize with the victims.

He wrote: "I am numbed by the growing number of casualties in the Turkey-Syria earthquake. I can only imagine the grief of the thousands of families who may have lost dear ones and the plight of the injured and those made homeless by this tragedy."

The tweet infuriated many social media users since it brought to mind Deborah Samuel's murder in May 2022 by enraged Islamic students at the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto for allegedly blaspheming Prophet Muhammad.

Condemning Deborah’s death, a tweet shared on Atiku’s page and later deleted, read: “There cannot be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered and all those behind her death must be brought to justice. My condolences to her family and friends.”

However, Atiku disassociated himself from the deleted tweet in a subsequent post. Additionally, he claimed that any social media post lacking the initials "A. A." was not his.
