Samuel Ugorji and Samuel Buhari, pilots with Caverton Helicopters accused of contravening the Executive Order of the Rivers Governor have been granted bail.

The Magistrate Court also granted bail to 10 passengers flown into Rivers State by the two pilots.

Chief Magistrate D.D. Ihua-Maduenyi granted the two pilots bail after hearing the bail application by their counsel.

The judge ordered them to present a surety who must be a management staff of Caverton Helicopters.

The Court ruled that the surety must own a landed property in Port Harcourt and ensure the two pilots attend trial.

He added that the surety will sign a bail bond of N1million each for the two pilots.

He adjourned the trial to May 19, 2020.

Trouble began for Caverton when the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, stormed the company premises and ordered the arrest of its two pilots whom he accused of flying “illegally” into Rivers.

The flight was authorised by the federal government.

The two pilots and 10 passengers were remanded in the Port Harcourt prison after they were charged with disobedience to lawful order – order of the governor on the restriction of movement or flight because of the coronavirus.

Governor Wike has been insisting that people flying into Rivers must subject themselves to health checks to ascertain if they are positive or not to the coronavirus.
