The renaming of the Minna International Airport in Niger State has generated controversy since it was announced by the state government over the weekend.

The airport which was renamed after President Bola Tinubu was remodelled to suit international standards.

In a press briefing on Sunday, March 10, Aminu Takuma, the Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment said the move to rename the airport after the President was a tribute to him for his significant support and contribution to the state.

Minna, the capital of Niger State is in ecstatic mood as President Tinubu is set to inaugurate the renamed airport, agro-processing zone, and agricultural equipment in the city today (March 11).

Hon. Binta Mamman, the state's commissioner for Information and strategies said that in addition to the commissioning of the airport, the President will also inaugurate the 5,000 pieces of agricultural equipment procured by the state government.

She disclosed that other engagements of the President will be a guided tour of the facilities at the remodelled airport terminal and later laying the foundation for Hajji terminal at the airport before returning to Abuja.

1)The airport was named less than a year in honor of Abubakar Imam, a prominent Nigerian writer and journalist from Niger.

2) The Minna International Airport will serve as an alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport considering the state’s proximity to the nation’s capital.

3) It will serve as a Cargo Airport.

4) The airport was first inaugurated by former military Head of State Ibrahim Babangida on June 20, 1990.
