Capitol Hill Siege: US envoy applauds Nigerians

United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, has applauded Nigerians for sympathizing with America during the siege which occurred at the United States Capitol on Wednesday.

In a communique made available to the sunnewsonline.com, Leonard expressed gratitude on behalf of the United States Government.

“Our heartfelt gratitude to the many citizens of Nigeria who sent messages of support during Wednesday’s difficult hours. The enduring friendship and partnership between the United States and the people of Nigeria will endure and thrive as we work to perfect our union and our democracy.”

The US envoy noted that the United States Congress has finalized its constitutionally mandated count of the Electoral College vote and affirmed the election of Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and Kamala D. Harris.  

In a release, she was hopeful of a smooth transition of power on January 20, 2021, although she condemned the lawlessness and rioting of protesters.

“The criminals who stormed the U.S. Capitol will be held accountable in accordance with the rule of law in the United States,” Leonard said.
