Nigerians on social media have reacted to persistent threats by the U.S. government to halt aid to Nigeria should the alleged killings of Christians continue.
This follows a recent press briefing where White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt disclosed that President Donald Trump is closely monitoring the unfolding events in Nigeria.
“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the United States will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may take action to wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” she said at the press conference.
Although still a claim, the development has sparked concerns within the international community about potential U.S. military involvement in the West African nation.
China, a key bilateral partner of Nigeria, has called out the Trump-led administration, rejecting any form of external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, in a statement published on the ministry’s website on Tuesday, said China, as a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, supports the Nigerian government’s right to pursue a development path that aligns with its national realities.
He stated: “As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities.
“We oppose any country’s interference in other nations’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We reject the wanton threat of sanctions and the use of force.”
Mao’s comments come in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing alleged persecution of Christian communities.
Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media have continued to react to the latest statement by the White House.
