Emerging video footage has captured the moment the campaign convoy of Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi was attacked by political thugs in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The incident occurred shortly after Obi and his entourage departed from a courtesy visit to the palace of the Obong of Calabar.
Confirming the assault, Obi’s media aide, Ester Umoh, raised an immediate alarm over the safety of the campaign team as hoodlums targeted the motorcade.
"Thugs are trying to attack our convoy," Umoh disclosed in a statement released during the chaos.
The circulating video footage shows moments of confusion and distress as security personnel and convoy vehicles attempted to navigate past the violent disruption.
Incidents involving violent disruption during political rallies and high-profile candidate movements remain a persistent challenge for law enforcement agencies leading up to major election cycles.
