CAN urges reps to fix 18 years for marriage

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the lawmakers to fix in the nation’s constitution 18 years as minimum age for marriage for female citizens.

Rev. John Oladapo made the recommendation on Wednesday while presenting the position of CAN before the Constitution Review Committee for the South-West zone.

Presenting the proposal on behalf of President of the association, His Eminence (Dr.) Samson Ayokunle, Oladapo said: “We recommend that the Constitution shall bring clarity and emphasis to recognising and affirming 18 years as the AGR of maturity and that for sexual consent.”

Ekiti State Commissioner for Regional Development and Special Duties, Ayodele Jinadu, who presented the state government’s position at the public hearing, told newsmen that the forum was an opportunity to look at areas of the constitution that are not okay.

He noted that most of the issues raised at the hearing such as devolution of power, gender equity, among others if eventually implemented, would put the nation on the right footing.

Addressing newsmen after the hearing, Chairman of the South-West Constitution Review Centre for Ondo, Osun and Ekiti states, Peter Akpatason, promised that all submissions would be relayed to House of Representatives.
