CAN petition Gbajabiamila over NCDC bill

CAN CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria has petitioned Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, over the controversial ‘Infectious Diseases Bill,’ which has passed second reading.

The bill is supposed to create a legal framework for the federal government to manage the special circumstances surrounding infectious disease outbreaks like the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed over 80 lives in Nigeria.

The 44-page bill vests so much power in the DG of the NCDC to test anybody has come under fire by the general public for being dictatorial.

In a memo forwarded to the Speaker, CAN said the bill has taken the willpower of Nigerians as well as their civil and human rights.

It reminded Gbajabiamila to thread carefully as several acts have been struck out including executive order of governments because of the disregard for Fundamental Human Rights.

It advised the Speaker and the house to check themselves and allow the spirit of God to prevail over their "primordial intentions and ambition."

This is coming after Dino Melaye filed a lawsuit against the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and two others, Pascal Obi and Tanko Sununu, over the controversial Bill.
