Buhari's naira redesign program is targeted at some people' - Wike to APC

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has said that the new naira program introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria is targeted at some politicians contesting the 2023 elections.

Wike made the comment in an exclusive chat with Channels Television from the State House in Rivers on Thursday, February 16.

With President Muhammadu Buhari going contrary to the ruling of the Supreme Court on the matter, Wike also noted that the timing of the execution of the policy might be wrong.

"We must consider the issue of timing. So people may say it is good. It is good to fight corruption, and I do believe so. But as far as I am concerned, the policy is targeted at some people."

He further called out President Buhari for his decision to ban the use of old N500 and N1000 notes.

Wike stressed that the president's decision was not proper.

President Buhari in a brief telecast on Thursday, February 16 instructed the Central Bank of Nigeria to release the old N200 naira notes to banks for circulation.

The Central Bank of Nigeria had extended the deadline for the swap of N200, N500, and N1,000 from January 31 to February 10.
