President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a congratulatory message to former vice president Joe Biden who has been declared president-elect of the United States after trouncing the incumbent, President Donald Trump.

In a statement released by presidential aide Garba Shehu, the Nigerian president said Biden's win is a significant reminder that democracy is the best form of government.

According to him, what is most fascinating about democracy is people's freedom to choose who they want and the supremacy of their will.

Nigeria's number one citizen noted that voters who can decide the fate of the politicians at the polling booth are the most powerful and not politicians.

He expressed optimism that Biden will add value to the presidency and world affairs as an experienced politician who has served in various capacities for many years.

Buhari said Nigeria is looking forward to better cooperation between both countries, especially at "economic, diplomatic and political levels, including the war against terrorism."

The Nigerian leader further called on Biden to introduce greater engagement with Africa on the basis of reciprocal respects and shared interests.

Biden was declared president-elect after surpassing the 270 electoral votes required for a candidate to win the presidency in America.

Jubilation and ululation have rocked cities in the US and across the world following the historic victory that will see America have its first female vice president, Harris Kamala. The official announcement will be declared on the on December 14.
