Breaking: FG bans former SARS members from police tactical units

The FG says former SARS members will not be part of any police tactical units.

According to VP Osinbajo, it is justified for youths to be angry over the silence of the government in relations to police brutality.

Osinbajo also promised that changes will be effected as regards policing.

The federal government has declared that no former SARS member will be drafted into any police tactical unit.

This was disclosed in a tweet on Friday, October 16, by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who acknowledged that many Nigerians have been brutalised by policemen.

According to him, Nigerians are right to be annoyed at the government's silence on police brutality.

He said: "Over the past week, we have been following the protests, and I have had a number of discussions with key people in the administration that you deserve to be informed about. Transparency, after all, is a key tenet of government.

"There are far too many people who have been brutalised at the hands of the police and this is unacceptable. We must take responsibility for protecting young people, even sometimes from those who are paid to protect them.

"I fully understand how many young people feel. Many feel that we have been too silent and have simply not done enough.

"These feelings of frustration are justified.

"With Mr. President’s approval, SARS has been completely disestablished, and none of its former members will feature in any police tactical units."

In a related development, some youths have made their stand in the ongoing protest against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

According to VP Osinbajo, it is justified for youths to be angry over the silence of the government in relations to police brutality.

The youths in a rally at the Unity Fountain, Abuja, declared their support for the police and other security agencies.

They also condemned the continuation of the #ENDSARS protests across the states.

Going further, the youths who claimed to be operating under the auspices of Coalition of Civil Society organizations also applauded President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu for disbandment of SARS.
