Borno police arrest six over N5.65m withdrawal from stolen phone

The Borno State Police Command has arrested six suspects over the alleged theft of a mobile phone and the subsequent withdrawal of N5.65 million from the victim’s bank account.

The suspects were arrested following an incident involving a passenger who lost his Infinix Smart 8 phone after travelling in a commercial tricycle in Maiduguri.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the incident occurred on October 13, 2026, when the victim, identified as Abba K “M” of Damboa Road, Maiduguri, discovered that his phone was missing after alighting from the tricycle.

The victim reported the matter to the police, prompting the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, to direct operatives of the Command’s VCRU Unit, also known as Crack, to investigate the case.

The police said investigators used digital forensic analysis and intelligence gathering to trace and arrest six suspects allegedly linked to the theft.

During the investigation, the suspects allegedly confessed to stealing the phone and unlawfully withdrawing N5,650,000 from the victim’s bank account.

The Command said the suspects also disclosed that the money was shared among themselves.

The stolen Infinix Smart 8 phone and the entire N5.65 million have since been recovered by the police.

The Command said the suspects would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.

The police urged residents to remain vigilant while using public transportation and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
