#BlackLivesMatter: Lagos Assembly wants sites, monuments named after colonial masters changed

The Lagos State Assembly has advised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to rename sites and monuments in the state which were named after colonial masters.

The advise comes amid Black Lives Protests which has seen Americans destroy monuments dedicated to slave masters in their country.

A letter to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has been ordered to be written by the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, for the renaming of similar site and monument nationwide.

According to Obasa, the move won't change history because history cannot be changed. He stated that it is to ensure that the treatment netted out to George Floyd is not repeated.

“The motion is about us, about Africans. We have to tell the world about our own civilisation. The resolve is not broad enough. It is not about Lagos State alone. We have to tell African Union about reparation started by the late Chief M.K.O Abiola” he declared.

In his own contribution, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu representing Eti-Osa Constituency 2, called for the changing of any history that makes black people feel inferior.

''This is a right step in the right direction and we need to change our psyche and history that will not make us feel as human beings. We need to change the narrative that connotes superiority in our history. I want my colleagues to support the motion” he said.
