U.S. President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the presidential race in the 2024 elections.
He made the announcement on Sunday, July 21 in a post on his official account. He dropped out of the re-election battle against President Donald Trump in a historic move that plunges the already turbulent 2024 White House race into uncharted territory.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a letter posted on his account.
In a statement, he said: “I will speak to the nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”
He expressed his deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see him reelected and thanked his Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner.
“Let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me. I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can’t do when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America,” he added.
