Besides a £12 burrito, I have never 'benefitted' from Peter Obi - David Hundeyin

Popular investigative journalist David Hundeyin has refuted the claim that he has financially benefited from former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Hundeyin's response came after a post on X suggested that the journalist had received financial benefits from the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

Prior to the presidential elections, Hundeyin was among a few Nigerians who supported the former Anambra governor's candidacy.

In his reaction, Hundeyin stated that he has never received any benefits from Obi, despite meeting him in London before the elections.

"In your world, taking a photo with a politician means 'benefitting' from them. Except for the £12 burrito that Peter Obi bought for me the night we took that photo at Paddington Hilton, what other 'benefit' have I ever received from him?" he wrote on X.

Hundeyin has also outlined reasons why Obi lost the 2023 elections. He believed that Nigerians were misled by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, who claimed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines had not failed and would not fail during the general election.

However, both federal and state elections were marred by irregularities.

During a recent podcast, Hundeyin mentioned that Peter Obi had adequately prepared for the elections. In an interview excerpt, he said, "I think there were mistakes made by the movement, not by him. In the context of Nigerian politics, he did his best. The mistake we made collectively was misinterpreting information."

"Yakubu Mahmood lied by stating that the BVAS would be used to tabulate results, which was false. This was our first mistake. The Electoral Amendment Act we thought we had was not the one we actually had."

"I know that Peter Obi believed the BVAS would be utilized because he personally told me. Following the election, the results should not have been announced immediately. Similar to how Kenya handles it, there should have been an immediate protest."

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Bola Tinubu, the candidate of Nigeria's ruling party, APC, as the winner of the presidential election held on Saturday.

Tinubu emerged victorious over 17 other candidates in the election, garnering a total of 8,794,726 votes, the highest among all candidates, meeting the constitutional requirement to be declared the winner.
