Arise TV co-anchor, Rufai Oseni has lambasted lawmakers and the Senate President, Godwill Akpabio after a video of them mocking struggling Nigerians with 'let the poor breath' comment went viral.

Recall that Akpabio and other lawmakers on Tuesday, made a “let the poor breathe” joke during plenary session which has since been greeted with criticisms.

This occurred while Akpabio, halted the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and distribution companies (DisCos) from hiking tariff, a motion moved by Senator Akintunde Abiodun, from Oyo State.

Displeased by the actions of the Senators, Rufai Oseni slammed the lawmakers for mocking the poor.

According to him, laughing at the poor shows how insensitive they are about the pain and suffering of the poor Nigerians.

He noted that while they receive their fat salaries several Nigerians are struggling to feed and cater for themselves and their families.

Expressing his disgust, Oseni said;

"I don't know what's funny about a bunch of guys that just sit up there, earn big fat salaries that they can't even state how much and they collect hundred and something billion every year to run a bunch of less than 500 guys and they seat down there and mock the poor people of this country that they steal from every single day.

So, I don't know what is funny about that. It's just reflective of the insensitivity of those bunch of guys, their fat over bloated pockets with their fat babarigas and regalia and they laugh at the insensitivity and pain of Nigerians.

But I've got news for them, If only they known how many people they sacked this week alone because companies can't afford to pay them increased salaries.

If only they know how many people have now packed their cars, If only they know how many people don't know where their next meal is going to come from.

If only they know how many people can't get forex and their businesses can't move forward again.

If only the know the pain the people are suffering. people can't pay their medical bills and they die on a daily in this country, they wouldn't be making this very funny jokes about the poverty and the plights of people. Only to think they are there to represent you and I. Really, Senators let us breath, it is not funny."

Explaining his reason for laughing while making the 'let the poor breath' comment, Senate Akpabio in a statement said he did not mean to insult the citizens, as he was aware of the hardships resulting from the high cost of living.

“We are deeply concerned about the negative tilting of a very harmless statement by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, about his deep concern and that of the Senate on the plight of the ordinary Nigerians as a result of the prevailing economic situation in the country.

"Let The People Breathe’ made during the Plenary on 26th July 2023, was made by Senator Akintunde Abiodun while speaking on the motion to halt the planned electricity tariff hike.”
