Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, expressed disappointment in Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, for his attacks on former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Speaking at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University on November 16, 2024, Obasanjo criticized the 2023 general election, describing it as a ‘travesty’.
Obasanjo raised concerns about Nigeria's deteriorating state, pointing out “widespread corruption, poor leadership, and immorality,” which, according to him, has fueled insecurity and underdevelopment.
The former president also labelled Nigeria’s economic situation as "Baba-go-slow" and "Emilokan" reigns as chaotic. Obasanjo also called for new and credible leadership for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore trust and prevent corruption.
In response to Obasanjo’s remarks, Onanuga tackled the former president and stated that Obasanjo’s tenure contributed to the country’s current economic crisis. He slammed Obasanjo, saying he presided over the most fraudulent election in Nigeria’s history.
Bode George, who was displeased with Onanuga’s remarks, defended Obasanjo and warned that Onanuga would face repercussions for allegedly insulting the former President.
The elder statesman asserted that Onanuga's treatment of Obasanjo was insulting, noting that the former president was old enough to be his father.
He said, “An old man who could be Bayo Onanuga’s father said something, and you took him on by blasting him right, left, and centre.
“Even if you want to react, the Yoruba culture does not allow that insult from him. Someday he would pay back, because there would be a day after, and that’s more important.”
