The Bauchi State Police Command has uncovered a young man, Muhammad Lawan, also known as Babangida, chained to a log for 17 years by his father, Mohammed Lawan, at Shadawanka Village of Bauchi LGA.
Police busted the scene following an intelligence report from a resident of the area on Monday.
The command's spokeson, SP Habib Nafiu, in a statement on Tuesday, said that the command's team rescued the middle-aged man who was allegedly confined and leg-chained by his father.
"On Monday, February 16th, 2026, at about 4: 20pm, we received information from a good samaritan that one Muhammad Lawan, popularly known as Babangida, had been confined by his biological father, Mohammed Lawan, in his house for 17 years without care.
"The team of detectives led by the DPO 'B' Division, in conjunction with the Command's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), visited the village and successfully rescued the very emaciated victim," the spokesperson said.
Nafiu said that the father has been arrested and is currently in custody. He added that the victim has been taken to hospital for proper medical attention and rehabilitation as directed by the Commissioner of Police, CP.Sani-Omolori Aliyu.
The CP has also directed the DPO to conduct a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding this inhumane act and subsequently transfer the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation.
