President Bola Tinubu-led federal government has announced Wednesday and Thursday, June 28 and 29 as public holidays for the celebration.

According to Channels TV, the announcement was made in a statement by the Ministry of Interior's Permanent Secretary, Oluwatoyin Akinlade on Monday, June 26.

“The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 28, and Thursday, June 29, 2023, Public Holidays in commemoration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration and heartily felicitates with the Muslim Ummah at home and in the diaspora.”

Akinlade enjoined Muslims and all Nigerians “to make sacrifices for the growth and development of our communities and our great country, Nigeria”.

The permanent secretary expressed hope that the prayers and sacrifices of the season will restore the much-desired peace and unity in the country's desire.

The Eid-il-Kabir festival is one of the ritual rites carried out in the Dhul-Hijjah, the last 12th months of the lunar month to remember the sacrifice made by Prophet Ibraham in the Islamic practice.

The ritual rites involved taking six days in Mecca and Medina, the location where Prophet Ibrahim reportedly carried out the act and those who could not travel to Saudi Arabia from Nigeria are expected to kill animals if they have the capacity to do so.
