President Bola Tinubu has been declared the new chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Nigerian president was elected at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Sunday, July 9, The Sun reported

ECOWAS President President Tinubu was unanimously selected to lead the regional body by the heads of state and governments at the event.

During the meeting, President Tinubu raised the alarm about an increase in terrorist activities as well as constant threats to lives and property. The President worried about the constant takeover in the West African regions, which truncated democratic governance.

He then called for collective action among member-states and pleaded, adding that his leadership would push ECOWAS members to achieve the goal set and fulfil the dreams of its founding fathers.

Tinubu urged ECOWAS leaders to unite and share values of peace, democracy and economic prosperity in the region for a brighter future. The President of Nigeria declared that he would prioritise stability, security, peace, strengthening of the ECOWAS institutions and regional economic integration.

President Tinubu, in his remark, said: “We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is very tough, but it is the best form of government.”
