Awoniyi under fire after controversial red card in Brighton mauling

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has come under criticism following his red-card offence during Coventry City’s 5-0 mauling by Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Sunday, September 14.

Awoniyi was sent off in the 53rd minute when his side were already trailing by two goals to nil, before Brighton capitalised on their numerical advantage to extend their lead by three more goals.

The 29-year-old was sent for an early shower after he was adjudged to have elbowed an opposing player during an aerial challenge.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie, in his post-match reaction, faulted the manner in which Awoniyi used his elbow.

“He has leaned into it. You cannot do that. It is evident that there is an elbow involved and that there is force,” he said.

Former England star Sue Smith also agreed with the referee’s decision during her post-match analysis on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“That is a red card. He is not even looking at the ball. He moves his arm towards the face.

“You cannot lead with your elbow like that; if you do and make contact with someone, the referee will certainly send you off,” she added.
