Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) presidential candidate in 2023, has spoken about his future political ambitions and the need for party unity and alliances.
During an interview with the Hausa service of Voice of America in Abuja, Atiku expressed his determination to continue pursuing the presidency as long as his health permits.
"Atiku stated, “Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy.
“Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning.
“However, given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single-handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required.”
Atiku acknowledged the challenges within the PDP, emphasizing the necessity for collective efforts and partnerships with other political entities to secure electoral success.
Reports note that Atiku, who will be 81 years old by the 2027 elections, has vied for the presidency on several occasions, with three official candidacies in 2007, 2019, and 2023.
Addressing the internal dynamics of the PDP, Atiku highlighted the importance of solidarity and strategic alliances to overcome the party's current hurdles and succeed in the 2027 presidential race.
Following speculations about potential mergers and collaborations, Atiku's recent meeting with Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has been of particular interest.
Regarding his interaction with Obi, Atiku reassured supporters, “This is to anybody that thinks there is going to be a misunderstanding between me and Obi, let me assure you that not even a small issue is going to happen between us.
“Also, we are going to be behind anybody that will be chosen to represent us in the forthcoming elections.”
