In an unexpected political development, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar visited the immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

The visit, which took place on Saturday, was marked by the presence of several key stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to which Atiku belongs.

Muhammadu Buhari, who retired to Daura after handing over the presidency to Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, welcomed Atiku despite their longstanding political rivalry.

The two veteran politicians have spent much of their careers on opposing sides, notably clashing in the 2014 APC presidential primary, which Buhari won before securing victory in the 2015 general election.

In 2019, Atiku contested against Buhari as the PDP candidate but was defeated in the closely contested presidential race. He faced another defeat in 2023, losing to Tinubu in an election he later contested up to the Supreme Court.

Despite these setbacks, Atiku has declared his intention to remain politically active, hinting at another presidential run in 2027.

The purpose of his visit to Buhari remains undisclosed, but their meeting drew considerable attention. Social media clips showed the two elder statesmen engaging in conversation, with their associates observing attentively.

This visit follows Atiku's recent Sallah homage to former Military President Ibrahim Babangida and ex-Military Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar in Minna, the capital of Niger State.

The interactions between these influential political figures suggest ongoing strategic discussions within Nigeria's political landscape.
