There is tension at the Ikpeshi area of Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo state as two riot police officers were reportedly beaten to death while two others were injured.

It was learnt that the mob attack was a result of the incident where a Toyota Hilux vehicle that belonged to the escort duty policemen in the convoy of the former member of Edo state house of assembly Emmanuel Agbaje hit a motorcycle.

The accident led to the tragic and immediate death of the motorcycle rider, a woman and her child, The Nation reported.

Sources disclosed that the youths in Ikpeshi stormed the office of the Edo state security vigilante network when the policemen were taken, overpowered and beaten.

However, two of the police officers were rescued by men of the vigilante group, and their rifles were recovered.

The rescued officers were said to be undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in Edo state, whose name was withheld.

The attacked police officers were said to be from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) 19, Port Harcourt, in Rivers State.

Tajudeen Alade, the chairman of the Akoko-Edo local government council, has condemned the actions of the Ikpeshi's youth, adding that those involved in the mob attacks would be identified, arrested and prosecuted.

Alade maintained that such would serve as a deterrent for other youths with such intentions.

Chidi Nwabuzor, the spokesperson of the Edo state police command and a Superintendent of Police (SP), has confirmed the incident.
