Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to effectively and impartially investigate the extrajudicial execution of Anthony Obodo — who was shot dead by police officers on Friday, August 28, 2026, along Agip by Ada-George Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to the human rights organisation, the police cannot be trusted to investigate themselves. It advised that any investigation must be done by an independent body.

The family of the victim said Anthony was driving a Lexus car when he was allegedly chased by police officers and shot at close range.

His sister said: "After being shot, he was breathing when police officers pulled him out of the vehicle, removed his gold chain and rings, abandoned him on the road in the rain and drove away in his car."

According to reports, he was found bleeding by the road by a passerby, who rushed him to a hospital, where he died shortly after.

Amnesty lamented that the horrifying killing of Anthony Obodo by the police is a sad reminder of the consistent targeting of young men, simply for driving a flashy car, using smartphones or having a laptop and other gadgets. The organisation spoke of documented cases in which police attribute crimes to young men for just wearing a gold chain.

"Lack of accountability is breeding and perpetuating impunity, creating an environment where police officers believe they have carte blanche to carry out atrocities.

"It is unacceptable that despite many pledges of reform and ending torture and extrajudicial killings, police in Nigeria continue to operate with complete impunity, while fomenting a toxic climate of fear and corruption," it said.
