Anger as EFCC ignores Ogun monarch who used naira to make flower garlands

Following the recent arrest of celebrities over the abuse of the naira, Nigerians have raised concerns at the EFCC’s refusal to arrest an Ogun monarch who was captured in a video using naira to make flower garlands.

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission had earlier announced its plans to go after people caught abusing the naira in whatever form.

The statement comes after the anti-graft agency arrested crossdresser, Idris Okuneye popularly known as Bobrisky after videos of him spraying naira at a movie premiere surfaced on social media.

On April 12, 2024, Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison without an option of a fine although he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Days later the EFCC arraigned businessman and socialite, Pascal Okechukwu popularly known as Cubana Chiefpriest and charged him on three counts. On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Chiefpriest pleaded not guilty and the court fined him N10 million with no prison time.

Several videos of notable personalities and politicians have surfaced on social media with many calling on the EFCC to go after them the same way they prosecute celebrities.

Among such notable personalities is Olu of Owode in Obafemi/Owode Local Government of Ogun State, Oba Kolawole Sowemimo who has been accused of abusing the naira notes in January 2024.

The Ogun state monarch, was seen in a viral video spraying money on Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 the ultimate at an event.

In the video, the monarch formed a long rope of N1,000 notes knitted together and wrapped them around the neck of K1.

Although the EFCC is yet to speak on the monarch’s video, the Egba traditional council suspended him for two months without salary.

Some Nigerians took to social media to react to the video, as they called on the anti-graft agency to arrest the monarch for flouting the law.
