America should not be in a rush to embrace Nigeria election results - US Senator Jim Risch

United States Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has released a statement on Nigeria’s recent elections.

According to him, the US should not be in a rush to embrace Nigerians presidential election results since the full picture of what occurred during the election is yet to be seen.

He noted that the electoral process has been viewed as flawed by electoral observers and most Nigerians.

He charged America to be more concerned with supporting the Nigerian people and their democratic aspirations rather than embracing the Nigerian government

“The ongoing electoral process in Nigeria is widely viewed as deeply flawed by election observers and many Nigerians. It is disappointing to see the administration rush to embrace the result while the full picture of what occurred during this electoral process is yet to be seen.

“I’ve expressed similar concerns related to other areas of our relationship with the Nigerian government. I worry this rush to judgement will undermine our ability to be an effective partner to all Nigerians, especially given their longstanding desire for democracy.

“With Nigeria heading into state-level elections in just a few days, it is important that the United States be more concerned with supporting the Nigerian people and their democratic aspirations than embracing the Nigerian government.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday, March 1, declared Bola Tinubu the winner of the presidential election at 4:00am.

He was said to have won the election with over 8.8 million votes, beating his contenders Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

This election results did not seat down well with many, including the opposition parties who faulted the election results with illegalities and malpractices.

The International Observers also said that their preliminary findings of the Nigeria election lacked transparency and that it was marred with violence, chaos and many other reasons as they call for the election results to be cancelled.
