The University of Lagos Mass Communication Alumni Association has said the welfare of students should be given priority in the crisis rocking the varsity.

In statement by its President, Mr Vincent Oyo, and the Chairman of the Media Forum, Prof. Oluyinka Esan, the group lamented the poor use of online learning by the varsity students and called for the adoption of a digital platform for immediate resumption.

The group, while commending the intervention of the President in the varsity’s management crisis, urged the visitation panel to be just and fair in its investigation and submit its report within the stipulated time.

UMCAA also appealed to the various unions in UNILAG to shun politics and support the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, and the interim Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr John Momoh, for peace and stability.

According to the group, the brand equity of the institution should be paramount to all parties.

“Quality education remains the key to the growth of any nation; the unlocking of its great minds. Where there is strife and our universities are in disarray, the nation loses the space for incubating its future leaders. We must stop this happening in our alma mater.

“The University of Lagos brand remains an outstanding brand. We must not allow it to be dented. We are delighted that hope is budding again. We pray this sad episode becomes a blessing in disguise. So we say, out with the negative vibes, let us now work to make news headlines from academic feats and glorious achievements from happy students and fulfilled staff,” UMCAA said.
