Alleged corruption: Magu wants Malami summoned in "interest of fair-hearing"

Apparently pushed to the wall, Ibrahim Magu has written the panel probing him to summon his accuser Abubakar Malami.

The anti-corruption czar also sought copies of the document in which the allegations against him were contained.

Magu said this would enable him to make sufficient defence against the crimes leveled against him by the justice minister.

Ibrahim Magu has written to the special presidential panel probing him, requesting the appearance of Abubakar Malami, attorning general of the federation, over the corruption allegation leveled against him by the minister.

The embattled chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who wrote through his legal representative Wahab Shittu, pleaded that Malami be summoned in a letter dated Friday, September 4.

Magu, since June 2020, has been in the eyes of storms after he was grilled by the operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) over allegations bordering on office abuse and insubordination as contained in Malami's petition.

In his letter to the chairman of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, retired justice Ayo Salami, the embattled EFCC boss applied for the issuance of a subpoena on Malami to appear before the panel.

Magu also stated that for the investigation to have a perfect bearing, the justice minister must appear and give evidence concerning his memo to President Muhammadu Buhari which indicted him.

Magu also sought copies of the allegations against him, saying it is in line with the fundamental principle of fear-hearing as guaranteed under the constitution.

The anti-corruption czar also stressed that having a sight on the document in which the allegations were contained would enable him to challenge his accuser.

"We humbly request that the Honourable Attorney General who is the main accuser in these proceedings be graciously invited to give evidence in connection with the subject matter of this inquiry with specific reference to our client in the interest of fair-hearing

"We believe this request ought to be resolved before our client is called upon to enter his defence in these proceedings," part of the letter read.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that an eminent law professor, Itse Sagay said that the charges against Ibrahim Magu were still "allegations in petition" and thus could not be used against the suspended EFCC boss until solid evidence is established.

Sagay, who is chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), made this known in a statement on Monday, August 10, while making his stand known on the investigation being carried out by the Salami-led committee.
