Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Saturday, called for unity among politicians, saying Nigeria would develop when sectional interests are removed.

Akpabio made the call in Gombe at the wedding of Hafsat Dankwambo, the daughter of the senator representing Gombe North and former governor of the state, Ibrahim Dankwambo.

The event, hosted by the Gombe State Government in honour of Dankwambo, a Peoples Democratic Party stalwart, attracted no fewer than 70 lawmakers.

“Let me start by congratulating the two families; it’s our prayer that the marriage will be blessed and fruitful. I want to say that it’s the will of God for us to come to Gombe.

“We see people including those from PDP, this is how leadership should be. We should be united. This marriage does not know political party, the Christians and Muslims believe in the oneness of God and God is love. Your excellency, I thank you for hosting us and I thank you for choosing us across political lines.”

Also speaking, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, congratulated the bride and groom and emphasised the importance of love and unity.

“You need to have patience, understanding, transparency in all you do,” he said.

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, praised the parents of the couple, saying, “Let me congratulate the parents for the wedding, this man is a PDP senator and we are all here as one family to celebrate with their children.”

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, who hosted the reception, thanked the dignitaries for attending.
