New details have emerged in the investigation into an alleged coup plot in which a recently deployed air force officer was reportedly assigned to assa§§inate Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Cable reports.
According to sources familiar with the probe, Squadron Leader SB Adamu (service no. NAF/3481), from Jigawa State, was posted to the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) — a programme under the Office of the National Security Adviser — just four weeks before the suspected plot was uncovered.
Although earlier reports claimed multiple suspects were attached to ONSA, sources clarified that Adamu was the only one linked to the office through the NCTC.
Military insiders said Major General Adamu Garba Laka, the National Coordinator of the NCTC, had requested a particular officer for deployment to the centre in August 2025.
However, his request was declined and Adamu was sent instead — a development now raising questions about whether the plotters had gained influence within the military’s chain of command.
Adamu is a member of Regular Course 59 of the Nigerian Defence Academy. In recent weeks, President Bola Tinubu relieved two service chiefs of their positions, including former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, leading to speculation about possible internal cracks in the armed forces.
The Defence Headquarters, however, maintains that the investigation of 16 military officers currently in custody is a standard internal disciplinary procedure.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said the findings will be made public in due course. Meanwhile, media reports continue to reveal the identities of officers allegedly linked to the plot.
