Agbonlahor assumes office as UNIBEN Acting Director of Sports

The newly appointed Acting Director of Sports, University of Benin Dr. Elvis Isimahonkhae Agbonlahor of Human kinetics and Sports Sciences Department, Faculty of Education, has assumed office with a promise to apply a scientific and systematic approach in his new post and to expand the institution’s sports infrastructure.

The Associate Professor made the promise while interacting with the Observer Sports.

Dr. Agbolahor whose appointment took effect on January 5, 2021, has since hit the ground running by establishing Golf Session and appointing of Organising secretaries to all sports associations of the school to ensure effective and efficient management of the games.

On his plan to expand the sports infrastructure of the institution, Dr Agbolahor said he is beginning with Ekehuan campus which lacked some important sports infrastructure.

According to him,” we have decided to build standard Tennis, Basketball and Volleyball Courts in Ekehuan Campus and the Vice-Chancellor Professor Lilian Salami has graciously approved funds for the procurement of the equipment “.

Highlighting the derivable gains in sports,the scientist emphasized on encouraging students and staff of Uniben to engage in one or two sports both to keep them fit and to provide them with career opportunities.

"We want to bring other sports we didn’t have before now. And we are rolling out programmes through which we can engage our students throughout each semester. We want to also introduce VC games for the staff.

As part of our welfare plans, we also want to improve the working environment of our coaches. We will encourage them to broaden their knowledge by studying beyond first degrees." Dr. Agbonlahor stressed.

The new Director of Sports said that his mission and vision is to see Uniben athletes competing and being honored at the highest international levels.

He promised to sustain and build on the legacy of the institution.

Dr Elvis Agbonlahor replaced Dr. Mrs. Felicia Egbase, who retired recently from the post. He enjoys playing tennis and golf.
