Africa's COVID-19 cases rise to over 44,000 in 53 countries - WHO

The cases of the deadly coronavirus in Africa has risen to more than 44,000 infections in at least 53 countries, according to the WHO report.

Giving an update on its official Twitter account, The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, revealed that there are over 1,700 fatalities in the continent.

"Over 44,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent – with more than 1,700 associated deaths," it said.

From the statistics released by the organisation, there are a total of 44,034 cases with 1,788 deaths as of Monday morning.

South Africa has recorded the highest COVID-19 cases in Africa as it battles with at least 6,783 cases and 131 deaths.

Egypt follows with a total of 6,193 cases and 415 deaths, while Morocco ranks behind with a total of 4,880 cases and 174 deaths.

Algeria has 4,474 cases and 463 deaths while Cameroon has 2,077 cases and 64 deaths.

According to Sunday night's report by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control - NCDC, there are a total of 2,558 cases and 87 fatalities in the West African nation.

Ghana follows with 2,169 coronavirus and 18 deaths, while Cameroun stands behind with at least 2,077 infections and 64 deaths, according to the WHO's African Region COVID-19 dashboard.
