Former Minister of Youths and Sports Solomon Dalung has shared his thoughts about the recent feud between Afe Babalola SAN and human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.
Babalola recently petitioned the police for the arrest of Dele Farotimi over allegations of defamation stemming from his book ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System'.
Farotimi was apprehended in Lagos and taken to Ekiti State. At the Ekiti Magistrate Court, the judge adjourned the bail hearing to December 20.
Babalola also requested that the court freeze all proceeds from Farotimi’s book after it became a best seller on Amazon.
Last week, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, visited Afe Babalola at his office in Ekiti State and also paid a visit to Farotimi in prison.
Reacting to the development, Solomon Dalung, while speaking to Seun Okinbaloye on his Mic on Podcast, said he was not pleased with the way Babalola handled the case.
He believes there are alternative ways of dealing with the situation with Farotimi rather than arresting him.
Dalung stated that he does not see Babalola emerging victorious from his defamation allegations against the human rights lawyer and that because Nigerians respect Farotimi, the entire country is against Babalola.
He said, “I would have thoughts that my father, Afe Babalola, should not have taken this route. Because he has exposed his legacies to public attacks and I don’t see him surviving it. Dele is a reputable human rights activist. I mean, his profile is highly revered by most Nigerians. So, they will never understand him with all of his claims for defamation. If I were to advise him, he would have just called Dele and said, look, my son, this is not the way to go. You will also get to where I am someday. Despite what you have known about me, this wasn’t a better way of handling it. But he had condescended into the arena, and it is him now and his family versus Nigerians. And I don’t see them ending up as victors.”
