Adeleke sympathises with Osun rainstorm victims, pledges support

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has sympathised with residents of Osogbo, the state capital, and its environs over the havoc caused by a rainstorm in parts of the state.

A video posted on Facebook by Osogbo Updates on Sunday shows the aftermath, as residents gathered to salvage the damage caused by the rainstorm.

“Heavy rain caused chaos at Aregbe Junction, right in front of Chicken Republic in Osogbo, Osun State, when a large billboard toppled onto a truck carrying soft drinks. Residents and commuters were left shocked as the incident disrupted traffic in the area,” it said.

Governor Adeleke, in a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, described the incident as unfortunate, assuring affected residents of government support.

“On behalf of the government and good people of my state, I sincerely sympathise with the victims of the heavy rainstorms occasioned by the devastating downpour on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in Osogbo and its adjoining communities,” Adeleke said.

He added that his administration would work through the Osun State Emergency Management Agency to address the losses suffered by victims.

“I must say that I feel deeply touched and alarmed by the incident and my administration will, no doubt, put in place everything morally and officially possible through the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA) with a view to offsetting the attendant losses incurred by the victims in Osogbo and other affected communities,” he said.

The governor also directed the Ministry of Works to clear affected roads to prevent further accidents.

“I have also directed the Ministry of Works to quickly swing into action by clearing the motorways to prevent further accidents,” he added.

Adeleke attributed the increasing occurrence of such natural disasters to climate change, noting that its effects informed his administration’s policies aimed at mitigating environmental risks.

He urged residents to adopt measures such as tree planting to reduce the impact of natural disasters, while cautioning against indiscriminate felling of trees.

The incident comes amid broader weather outlooks for Nigeria.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency had earlier released its 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, forecasting normal to above-normal rainfall in several parts of the country, including areas in the southwest.
