An activist and Special Assistant to the governor of Delta State on political matters, Comrade Austin Ozobo has urged politicians to fight crimes in the Niger Delta region through massive employment programmes, which include skill and vocational training, education, and moral development.

Ozobo made the call on Wednesday, December 29, at the Kiagbodo annual convention in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

The activist who was the guest lecturer at the event thanked Kiagbodo community for “the rare privilege and honour” given him to address the convention on the distressing national economy submitting that the only way out of the doldrums lies in massive provision of gainful employment for the youths.

He said, “There is a saying that a society that fails to prepare for her future leaders is a failed society. Good parents will always prepare for their tomorrow by preparing their children to take over their reign.

“Nigeria, Ijaw nation or Kiagbodo as the case may be, can’t be developed when the youths are suffering and sidelined in the scheme of things.

“Leaders in every circle should have it at the back of their minds that Kiagbodo, like other societies, can not develop appreciably without the youths being developed academically, scientifically, financially, spiritually, psychologically, mentally, morally, vocationally and physically”, he added.

Other speakers at the event were the Director-General Conference for the Actualization of Human Rights, Omes Ogedegbe, Director General of CAHR, Delta State, Comrade Monday Enudi, the State secretary of CAHR, Comrade Isreal Arigbe, SA to the Delta State Governor on Political Matters,Comrade Ellington Ebakumo, as well as the Coordinator Niger Delta Northeast Boko Haram Victims Rehabilitation Movement, Comrade Dickson Jatitor among others.

Ogedegbe who presided at the event lamented over what he tagged the deteriorating state of Kiagbodo community under the present political dispensation. He noted that politicians from the community, in particular, have failed the people.

He also expressed disappointment at the absence of key Kiagbodo political leaders at the community’s annual convention, just as he blamed such leaders for the noticeable underdevelopment of the community.

Ogedegbe remarked that politicians in Kiagbodo should not only be seen as good at wooing electorates during elections, but also should also avail themselves during the time of need in the community.

Our correspondent observed that Kiagbodo community was agog as dignitaries trooped into the community in their numbers from far and wide to celebrate the community’s annual convention.
