Accept Tribunal’s verdict as final - Yakubu Gowon to Nigerians

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has advised Nigerians to accept the decisions of the court as final at the end of the Tribunal petition.

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal hearing has been said to begin on Monday, May 8, 2023.

Speaking at a symposium in honour of a one-time Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Chike Idigbe on Thursday, Gowon urged Nigerians to allow the courts do its work without any interference.

Other dignitaries present at the event include; the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Alfa Belgore; Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba; and some Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

Recall that on March 1, 2023, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, declared Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress winner of the presidential election held on February 25.

Yakubu noted that Tinubu won the election on the grounds that his party scored the majority of votes cast in the polls.

Tinubu scored 8.8 million votes to beat his contenders Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 6.9 million votes to become the second and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) who polled 6.1 million votes emerged as third.

As a result of the pronouncement, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar have headed to the court to contest the outcome of the election.
