Abuja court finds APC Rep member Victor Mela guilty of lying under oath

A member of the House of Representatives, Victor Mela, has been found guilty by a magistrate court in Abuja for lying under oath.

According to Premium Times, the court ruled that the lawmaker committed the offence while filing the CD001 form of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prior to the 2019 elections.

Mela who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was found guilty on Tuesday, November 10, following a prosecution by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command.

The presiding judge has set a different date for prescribing the sentence on the lawmaker. His lawyer has pleaded for leniency.

Mela represents Billiri/Balanga federal constituency of Gombe state in the House of representatives.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has denied reports that it mandated the Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC) marshals to start carrying arms.

In a report by The Nation, Akinfolarin Samuel Mayowa, the chairman of the lower chamber's committee overseeing the commission made the disclosure on Monday, November 9.

According to Mayowa, the committee at no point stated that officials of the FRSC should or should not bear arms in accordance with the law establishing the commission.

In another report, lawmakers in the House of Representatives have told the federal government not to consider shutting down the Nigerian social media space.

Lawmakers serving on the House committee on information, national orientation, ethics and values, made the statement on Tuesday, October 27, The Tribune reported.

The members of the committee were opposed to recommendations by the Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed for stringent regulation of social media.
