Abdul Mumuni MKO Abiola, one of the sons of the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola has disclosed a revelation about his elder brother Kola Abiola’s romance with Babangida’s daughter.
In an interview on Seun Okinbaloye’s podcast show, Mic On on Sunday, June 16, 2024, Abdul revealed that his elder brother Kola was involved a relationship with Babangida’s daughter while their father was in prison.
Recall that in June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was considered the most peaceful, credible and fair in the history of the country, the results were annulled by the then military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.
In 1994, Sani Abacha, another military general who had overthrown the interim national government that Babangida handed over to, imprisoned MKO Abiola, where he eventually died on 8 July 1998.
Abdul blamed his brother for not properly upholding their father’s legacy after his death and expressed relief that his father did not witness what his first son had become.
He stated,
“The last time I saw him, he said, and I will quote his words, ‘Do I want to do fire for fire?’ and I asked him, ‘If we do fire for fire, will you eat?’ Look, the whole Nigeria is in fire, and you’re asking me if you want to do fire for fire. The idea is that I’m already in fire, so let’s do it as long as something positive will come out, and I will be able to take care of my family and people who just need help in general. So, yeah, we are not on good terms.
“I definitely do because he was in a pivotal position, especially after the whole crisis. He could have been a voice of true democratic values. He chose not to. Apparently, at the time my father was still in jail, he was in a relationship with Babangida’s daughter. Its just sad. I was actually a little bit pleased that my father did not get to come out and see what his first son had turned out to become. And I’m sure my father wouldn’t be pleased about it. So, I’m not pleased.
“So, I told brother Kola when I got back to Nigeria, the money that is outside the country, I don’t want to disturb you with that one, that is for you. Eat it, do whatever you want, that is your business. But the ones that are in Nigeria, we will die there."
Abdul believes his brother cannot rule Nigeria. Adding that since he was unable to manage his father’s empire and sustain the family how can he manage an entire country.
Recall that Kola Abiola contested for the presidency on the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in 2023.
Abdul said, “MKO Abiola’s legacy would have been properly sustained if Kola was in a better position. And he could have been a voice of better democratic values, but he chose not to.
“During the time my father was still in jail, he was busy (with other things). It’s sad, but I’m a little pleased that my father didn’t come out to see what his first son has become.
“I’m unhappy with him (Kola Abiola), and even Nigerians are unhappy. You can see how many people voted for him when he campaigned for the presidency.
“I wondered how he thought he could be president when he could not manage Abiola’s empire. How will he manage Nigeria?
“This is the problem in Nigeria: people are not showing capacity in their own little sphere of work but want a higher position.”
