Comedian and filmmaker AY Makun has urged Nigerians to reflect honestly on the country’s challenges following the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
In a video message on Instagram, Makun said that people who depend on politicians or political structures for their livelihood often struggle to speak truthfully about national issues.
He argued that financial ties to political interests can weaken accountability. He added that Nigeria’s security and governance problems should not be framed through political, ethnic, tribal, or religious divides.
Instead, he called on citizens to prioritise the broader national interest and their shared responsibility in addressing issues affecting all Nigerians.
“It’s time we tell ourselves some truths. When your source of livelihood depends on politics or politicians, your conscience d!es and telling the truth becomes your greatest feår. That is one thing I have noticed amongst us. We need to reflect deeply on the state of the nation and our collective responsibility as Nigerians. Today, we are dealing with matters that affect the country, not a political party, tribe, or religion”.
His remarks come amid heightened public concern over insecurity, including recent abductions of students and teachers in Oyo State.
