APC will shock opposition after convention, says Basiru

The All Progressives Congress has again ruled out the possibility of an implosion in the party as a result of its just-concluded congresses and the forthcoming national convention and primaries.

The party described the purported imminent internal collapse as the wishful thinking of the opposition, noting that nothing in the APC suggests any crack, let alone a crisis.

It maintained that the outcome of the congress would shock the opposition as their wishful thinking would not come to pass.

Both the Peoples Democratic Party (Tanimu Turaki faction) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party had predicted that the APC would experience an implosion after its congresses and convention as a result of the influx of opposition governors, lawmakers, and others into the party.

The APC had fixed February 18 for the ward congresses, while the national convention is slated to hold from March 27 to March 28.

However, in a report published on February 14 by Sunday PUNCH, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ini Ememobong, alongside his counterpart in the NNPP, Oladipo Johnson, had argued that the APC congresses and convention could heighten internal divisions and potentially spark a significant crisis within the ruling party.

Speaking with Sunday PUNCH on Saturday, the National Secretary of the APC, Ajibola Basiru, said the party would shock the naysayers after its convention, noting that the processes would promote party unity rather than the division anticipated by the opposition.

He urged the opposition to organise themselves and stop wishing for the collapse of any political platform as a means of survival.

He said, “It is just the wishful thinking of the opposition, and it is not going to happen. We just organised congresses across the country and everything went well, except in two or three states where we have to resolve differences among party members.

“We’re organised and united, and as we always tell the evil wishers, there will be no implosion before or after our convention and primaries. Our primaries will be organised in a fair and transparent way to ensure accountability. We will shock the opposition.

“I will urge the opposition not to participate in the elections if what they are waiting for or banking on is a wishful implosion in our party that will never happen. They do not need to wait for the death of a platform for their survival.”
