AAU lecturer found dead in hotel room after moment with 21-year-old lady

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, was discovered unresponsive in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Edo State. The circumstances of his death are currently being investigated.

Uwuigbe, a faculty member in Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on Monday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel located in the Mosco district of Ekpoma, within Esan West Local Government Area.

According to the Edo State Police Command, the incident was reported around 8 pm, after Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel and enlisted the company of a 21-year-old woman named Angela Defa Jacob.

Police spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem stated that Uwuigbe requested the woman to step out of the room to buy water. Upon her return, she found the lecturer unconscious and immediately raised the alarm.

“The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police,” Ikoedem said.

Law enforcement authorities have detained a woman, a hotel owner, and a manager to investigate the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death. The investigation is still in progress, and police say the details are not yet clear.

The remains of Uwuigbe have been placed in the morgue at Oriaifo Memorial Hospital as authorities continue their inquiries.

AAU has verified that Uwuigbe was part of its academic staff but has distanced itself from the circumstances of his passing.

Otunba Aladenika, the university’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident took place outside the campus and is not connected to the university’s official functions. He also mentioned that the 21-year-old woman involved is not affiliated with AAU.
