'A win for us by our own' — Nigerians wax lyrical about D'Tigress coach Rena Wakama after AfroBasket triumph

A section of Nigerian fans have taken to social media to shower encomiums on D'Tigress head coach Rena Wakama after guiding Nigeria to their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title.

Following her appointment in 2023, the US-born Nigerian has led the team to back-to-back AfroBasket titles in 2023 and 2025.

The 33-year-old became the first woman to win the Women's AfroBasket title and also the first woman to win back-to-back titles.

Wakama led her side to secure a 78–64 victory over Mali to clinch their seventh AfroBasket title.

D'Tigress also extended their unbeaten run in the tournament to 29 matches.

Born in the United States to parents who hailed from Okrika, Rivers State, Wakama won the FIBA Best Coach award after the tournament.

Her heroics have drawn exceptional praises from Nigerians on social media.

An X user, @Apst_EnJohnson, wrote, "Congratulations to our beloved coach Rena for doing Nigeria proud. I'm really proud of you. HEAVEN IS YOUR LIMIT AND NOT THE SKY."

Another user, @loveday_tom, said, "Congratulations to the D'Tigress and a special one to Rena Wakama. We the people of Wakama-Ama community in Ogu/Bolo LGA of Rivers are proud of you. Keep flying high!"

@ol_olabode tweeted, "So special ❤️ A win for us by our own! This is true democracy 🙌🏿💚"

"As a successful coach, she also holds a bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation and a master's degree in business administration," @arinze_udeji added.

@OniZaccheaus also said, "Now you're talking. What a woman! The pilot who landed the plane and the passengers safely. Kudos to Coach Rena."
