85% of Nigerian sex workers in Europe migrate from Edo State - CLEEN Director

Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Benson Olugbuo, has said that about 85 per cent of Nigerian sex workers in Europe migrated from Edo State.

Speaking on the topic 'Community Awareness: Panacea to Ending Trafficking of Women and Girls' during a town hall meeting on Wednesday in Benin, Mr Olugbuo hinted that the International Organization for Migration (IOM), put the figure at over 60 percent in 2018.

He stated that some recruiting areas for traffickers and people seeking to migrate to Europe are Orhionmwon, Oredo and Ikpoba-Okha local government areas.

According to the Executive Director, due to the incessant behaviour of Nigerians wanting to seek greener pastures, the country has in the last two years, evacuated thousands of its citizens from Libya and Lebanon as a result of the abuse and slavery meted out at the people.

Trafficking of persons is a mordern-day slavery, Mr Olugbuo said. Adding that the impact of the act leaves a longlasting effect on the victims.

He is therefore, calling on the religious bodies, traditional institutions and the state government to intervene in putting an end to the menace.
