A former vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said there's no way a unified opposition candidate will emerge for the 2027 presidential election.
This was as he dismissed the opposition summit held in Ibadan by factional members of the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress.
Baba-Ahmed spoke when he appeared on Channels Television's Politics Today programmed on Tuesday night.
He said, “I think it is a lie (unified opposition candidate). There is no way they will agree; it is not possible. It is only two parties, PDP and ADC. Now the faction of PDP who went there are the runners-up to Wike,” Baba-Ahmed said.
“Two parties coming to say that they are the entire opposition in Ibadan doesn’t make sense to me and I think it should not even be a topic for you and I to dwell upon.”
Baba-Ahmed also revealed plans to leave the Labour Party to join the People's Redemption Party (PRP).
He stated that regardless of the party's current situation, he had made up his mind to defect to PRP.
He said, "There is more to it. When there was real peace in Labour Party, someone was redeployed to the Labour Party and because of the antecedents of the the person. What Labour Party stood for, is not the same now. We have a Government of today who is interested in destroying other political parties.
"I am leaving the Labour Party [at] midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old,"
