2027: Peter Obi explains ‘ready to die for my vote’ comment

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday explained why he expressed his readiness to die for his vote in the 2027 election.

Obi explained that he made the remark to encourage Nigerians who had expressed their determination to ensure that their votes count in 2027.

Recall that Obi, while speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, had said he was ready to die for his vote in 2027.

However, in an interview with Arise Television, Obi said: “What I did in Port Harcourt was more of listening to the people. It wasn’t me talking; they were asking questions and one of them said, ‘We are prepared to die this time to defend our votes,’ and to encourage them, I said I’m prepared to die with them.

“It’s symbolic and what we are saying is that we are prepared to ensure that our votes count and they must count.”

The former Anambra State governor also said a system would be put in place to ensure that the correct results are transmitted from polling units to Nigerians.

He added: “We must make sure that every polling unit, if votes are counted and recorded properly, if votes are to be transmitted properly, we will have a dual transmission that as it’s going into the designated INEC portal, it’s also being transmitted to where the people can see it.

“This time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our own situation room the correct results, and I’m sure that there are so many agencies that would do the same thing so that we will not have a situation where somebody just pronounces something that didn’t emanate from the polling unit.”
