Football’s world governing body, FIFA, has officially launched disciplinary proceedings against the South African Football Association (SAFA) over the eligibility controversy involving midfielder Teboho Mokoena.
The Mamelodi Sundowns star was fielded in South Africa’s 2–0 victory over Lesotho in a World Cup qualifier on March 21, despite being suspended for the match due to yellow card accumulation.
The game, played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, saw Bafana Bafana claim top spot in Group C and has since held on.
Mokoena received his first yellow card during South Africa’s 2–1 home win over Benin Republic in November 2023, with the caution issued in the 54th minute.
His second booking came in their 3–1 victory against Zimbabwe in June 2024.
According to FIFA regulations, any player who accumulates two yellow cards during the qualifiers is automatically suspended for the next match.
Despite this, Mokoena started against Lesotho and played 82 minutes before being substituted.
As reported by Complete Sports, the matter has been referred to FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, with SAFA given six days to respond to the charges.
If found guilty, South Africa could forfeit the three points and goals from the match, a decision that could significantly alter the standings in Group C.
