2023: Stop overheating polity - Sharia Centre warns politicians

INEC INEC

The Centre for the Promotion of Sharia’h has cautioned politicians against overheating the polity ahead of next year’s general elections, saying Nigeria is already facing threats to its corporate existence through various agitations.

Speaking during their meeting in Abuja, Aminu Inuwa Muhammad, who is the National Coordinator for the Centre, said Nigeria has remained consistent with the peaceful transfer of power, stressing that 2023 should not be different.

He said Nigerians have demonstrated their resilience and commitment to democracy despite serious threats to the country’s corporate existence since the first military coup, the civil war and recent secessionists’ activities.

He said: “Like all previous transitions, politicians have overheated the polity in preparations for the 2023 elections.

“In view of the developments in the political landscape, it has become imperative for the Muslim Stakeholders to review the strategic interest of Muslims.

“The political parties have fielded their candidates, yet some politicians and most, unfortunately, even religious groups have been spitting fire and brimstone insisting that parties must bow to their choices and narrow interest. This is against the principles and spirit of democracy.

“We implore all Nigerians to reaffirm their commitment to the core values of the leading faiths in Nigeria and reject all attempts to discriminate any presidential ticket based on religious identity.”

Similarly, Tajudeen Muhammad Bello, who represented the FCT chapter of Imam Initiative, said the meeting was to brainstorm on critical issues affecting the North and how to get it right in the next elections.
