The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, started his campaign in the Akwa Ibom state capital, on Monday, October 10, 2022.

Atiku pledged to bring back to life the Nigerian economy, go to war against insecurity and to bring Nigerians together in unity and harmony.

However, some aggrieved governors stayed away from the campaign, deepening further the lack of unity in the party.

To take a step towards fixing the problem, some governors and stakeholders of the South-South geo-political zone of the party had at a meeting on Sunday, October 9, 2022 vowed to unite and work towards saving Nigeria during the 2023 general elections.

Speaking at the rally, Atiku stated, “Nigeria wants to be like Akwa Ibom. You know why? Because since 1999, you have not changed party, but you can see the development that is taking place here in Akwa Ibom.

“So, today (yesterday), we have inaugurated the flag off of our campaign to rescue Nigeria from hunger, to rescue Nigeria from poverty, and also bring back the unity that we require in this country.

“I want to appeal to all Nigerians, I am standing in Akwa Ibom today to ask them to vote for PDP.”

As the campaigns for the 2023 elections begun nationwide, more controversies resulting from internal rifts have emerged among the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
