Presidential aspirant for the People's Democratic Party(PDP), Adamu Garba has suggested a change of the country's name from Nigeria to the 'Nigritian federation' or simply 'Nigritia'.

According to him, the change of name will form part of his reforms when elected as president in 2023.

"How about we rebrand this country, properly federalize it and rename it to “The Nigritian Federation” or simply NIGRITIA. After all, Nigritia is our ancient name before Lady Lugard renamed it Nigeria," the 69-year-old politician tweeted.

"It is high time to clean ourselves from negative stereotypes, reorganize ourselves and reclaim our country away from our colonial identities and divisions to our own definitions of unity, integration, tolerance and cohesion," he added.

According to Mr Garba, 'identity is everything'.

He mentioned other African countries like Ghana, Kenya, Benin, and Togo as countries that adopted a new name after independence.

Nigerians will go to the polls in February 2023 to elect their next leader when President Muhammadu Buhari's term of office expires.
